Along parts of the southern California coast in Summer 2023, rapid growth of harmful algae is affecting marine mammals, particularly California sea lions and dolphins. If you encounter a marine mammal in distress, keep your distance (and keep pets away) and contact Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute’s Hotline to report the situation: 805-567-1505 or complete their online rescue form. In March 2023 NOAA released a Final Management Plan for Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. The plan is accompanied by a Final Environmental Assessment. Learn how the new plan will guide sanctuary management to address priority issues and implement core programs over the next 5-10 years. The final plan is available online.
Applications are currently being sought for the Commercial Fishing seat (alternate) on the advisory council. For over forty years, the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary remains invested in relationships with the commercial fishing community in order to provide resource protection that supports productive fisheries. Commercial fishing council representatives (one member and one alternate working together) have played an essential role in leading collaborative projects that support the well-being of their communities and the sanctuary’s mission. Applicants with knowledge and/or experience with the commercial fishing community and activities in the sanctuary region are highly encouraged to apply.
